Behind the Scenes: Vineeth Sreenivasan, Jomon T John and Shobhana on the sets of Thira
Here’s to 3 decades of the brilliant, versatile, multi-award winning actress and danseuse, my favourite: Shobana. You’ve given me 30 years worth of entertainment, inspiration, and awe- I hope there will be many more years of the same to come.
In honor of 30 years, a then and now.
Thazhvaaram | Thira (2013)
Thira released yesterday and I was on the edge of my seat the whole day because this was the return of my favourite danseuse and national award winning actress Shobana to Malayalam cinema after almost 4 years (I’d consider it longer because Sagar Alias Jacky doesn’t even count- so many things exploded and got shot in that movie, including my brain). Not that I was particularly concerned it would be a failure because a Sreenivasan can never create a failure, but it was competing with Geetanjali (I guess Dr.Sunny really does need Nagavalli to make a good film) and Tedulkar’s final match. Nonetheless, Thira smashed the shores and how amazingly it did. I’m dying to watch it. And here’s why my favourite is the best:
with this film, Shobhana ma’am is completing 30 years in film industry as an artist.. we r all making the best effort to celebrate her coming back on silverscreen!! before the shoot, i was a huge fan of hers’. but after working with her, i realised how phenomenal she is as an artist!! - Director Vineeth Sreenivasan
Rohini Pranab will be a role in Shobana’s acting career which is sure to be remembered in a long time run. Once again Shobana proves why she is still one of the best in the industry…Here comes a movie which stands apart from the rest of Malayalam films, which entertains the viewers from start to end and makes us crave for more. Yes, Thira by Vineeth Sreenivasan is a well directed, well acted, engaging movie which can be termed as paisa vasool.
While Dhyan gives a splendid performance for a debut movie,it is Shobana who steals the show…Thira is a must watch for all the good movie lovers.
‘Thira’s life force is of course the performances, dominated by Shobana’s sterling enactment of the protagonist Rohini. She shows why she is considered one of the finest actresses of our times…This ‘Thira’,will keep coming back to your mind like those never ending waves in the sea and the questions that it raises won’t vanish even if a turn a blind eye.It is passionate film making and Vineeth ends the movie tantalizingly, as we are promised sequels to this. The first among what is promised as a trilogy,Thira has built a strong foundation for what is to follow.Hopefully, this is just the beginning of a wav
Shobana carries the film on her shoulders from the very onset…Thira is that thriller which has got almost all the pieces right as in a jigsaw puzzle, with some minute flaws here and there, which can be forgiven. The pre-release hype and a positive word of mouth should help it further. Let Thira surge ahead
did someone say queen??
the women of Indian cinema
"Screw writing “strong” women. Write interesting women. Write well-rounded women. Write complicated women. Write a woman who kicks ass, write a woman who cowers in a corner. Write a woman who’s desperate for a husband. Write a woman who doesn’t need a man. Write women who cry, women who rant, women who are shy, women who don’t take no shit, women who need validation and women who don’t care what anybody thinks." (x)
